The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to use the drug Viagra, which is manufactured in India, because of the possible link to heart problems.

The warning was posted on the drug's website Wednesday, according to the FDA.

The drug, which is sold in the United States under the brand name Viagra, is prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence. Viagra is only available with a prescription, the drug's maker, Pfizer, said in a statement Wednesday.

Viagra's manufacturer, Eli Lilly, is also advising consumers not to purchase the drug, its website said.

The FDA said it does not know why the drug was not prescribed to patients.

"Patients and prescribers should consult with their doctor before taking Viagra," the FDA said in a news release.

It added that a recent study found that those with heart problems who took Viagra had a 40 percent greater chance of having an attack or stroke than those who didn't take the drug.

Viagra, a PDE5 inhibitor, is also used to treat erectile dysfunction, but there's a small chance that the drug may also be linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, such as breast and prostate cancer. The drug has not been approved for this purpose.

Viagra was first approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction by the FDA in 1998 and is currently available through doctors.

Eli Lilly is the manufacturer of Viagra and Lilly says that it has received marketing approval from the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Eli Lilly was also the manufacturer of a drug called Avodart, which is used to treat high blood pressure.

Avodart is a type of blood pressure medication called a PDE5 inhibitor. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in your penis, allowing blood to flow into your penis when you get sexually excited.

Avodart is also sold under the brand name Viagra, and is not available without a prescription.

The FDA said it does not know how the drug is manufactured, how it works in the body or if it affects health in the general population.

The FDA said it does not know how the drug is distributed, or who makes the drug and when it is being taken.

A spokesperson for the drug company Pfizer, which makes Viagra, did not return an emailobic's request for comment.
